September Newsletter 2019

When I was a youth pastor, the book “I Kissed Dating Goodbye” came out and influenced a lot of young believers.  The young author of the book, Joshua Harris, later became a pastor.  However, just recently, he left his wife and publicly declared on social media that he was no longer a Christian.  A few weeks after Harris’ announcement, former Hillsong worship leader, Marty Sampson, made a similar announcement, that he had found peace in his decision to no longer believe in Jesus Christ and the Gospel.  Unfortunately, these popular figures shared it as if coming to some new enlightenment.

This can be so discouraging to our faith when those who were once part of the family of believers seem to celebrate their decision to leave.  It can rock our own faith and cause us to be appropriately concerned for those choosing to deny Christ.  Here are some Scriptures that speak to this issue and direct us as believers:

  • Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come. This is how we know it is the last hour. They went out from us, but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us… As for you, see that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father.  And this is what He promised us—eternal life.  (1 John 2:18-19, 24-25)

Even in the Apostle John’s day, the church had those who were leaving the family of believers to embrace the world.  John tells the family of Christ that this will happen in the last “hours”, and as for those in the church, they should continue to abide and remain in relationship with the Lord.  This relationship is our eternal life.

  • It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit, who have tasted the goodness of the Word of God and the powers of the coming age and who have fallen away, to be brought back to repentance. To their loss they are crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace. (Hebrews 6:4-6)

Here in Hebrews, we are warned that those who have been a part of the church fellowship, have experienced proximity to the working of the Holy Spirit and the sharing of God’s Word – but then fall away, may never return to Christ because their heart is hardening to the Lord and they are shaming the great name of Christ by their departure.  This is an important warning to stay the course with Jesus.  I pray that each of us have great accountability through home-groups and discipleship groups to keep on track with Jesus.

Discipleship Corner

Do you have a plan to make disciples who make disciples?  I’ve heard that if you fail to plan, you plan to fail.  I am not a gifted planner, yet I realize that when I make a plan, my chances to succeed are much greater.  I believe making disciples needs intentionality.  Yes, we want to be organic, comfortable and relational, but we also need to be intentional.  What is your plan?  If you want help coming up with a plan, I’d love to work with you on it, don’t hesitate to reach out to me.

“Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death?  We were therefore buried with Him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father we too may live a new life.”  Romans 6:3-5

Gospel Project Key Passage
All things have been created
through Him and for Him.
He is before all things and in
Him all things hold together.
Colossians 1:16b-17

Gospel Project Status Update
God rescued Noah and his family from the flood. The story of Noah points ahead to a greater rescue. God’s Son, Jesus—the only perfectly righteous One—came to take the punishment for our sin. By trusting in Him, we are saved from the punishment our  sin deserves.

Hope’s Awana ministry will be up and running on Wednesday evenings, 5:45-7:45 p.m., at Summit Ridge Community Church. The program is for kids that are 4 years old through 6th grade.  Do you have a family in your neighborhood that you’ve been ministering to or inviting to church?  Why don’t you bring their boys and girls to Awana to hear the Gospel and have a lot of fun. If you have questions about Awana, call Tim Tolson at 575-1307.
