Repentance

“The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life’s worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature.”  Luke 8:14

There is a realization required in this walk with Christ that this world has nothing that can quench my emptiness.  In fact, this life’s worries, riches, and pleasures can actually choke out a relationship with Christ.  We must make the decision that Jesus is better and is our only hope.

When we repent, we acknowledge wrongdoing and a deep desire for change.  In addition to that, repentance is a conviction that this world has nothing to offer me:

"The first step toward God is a step away from the lies of the world.  It is a renunciation of the lies we have been told about ourselves and our neighbors and our universe…  Repentance is not an emotion.  It is not feeling sorry for your sins.  It is a decision.  It is deciding that you have been wrong in supposing that you could manage your own life and be your own god; it is deciding that you were wrong in thinking that you had, or could get, the strength, education and training to make it on your own; it is deciding that you have been told a pack of lies about yourself and your neighbors and your world.  And it is deciding that God in Jesus Christ is telling you the truth."  (Eugene Peterson)

What an invitation we have from Jesus to repent from our sins and the wrong beliefs we have held in this world and run to our compassionate God.  The world behind me, the cross before me…

Beginning on Thursday, September 3, we will meet for 10 weeks in the Community Room from 9:00 -11:00 a.m. for a study in the book of Joshua by Jen Wilkin. To sign up for this study, please contact Sheree Dennee at dsdennee@msn.com or 520-403-9939. Please sign up by August 26 so we have time to order books. Books for this study, which includes a video access code, will be $27.00.
In this 10-session, verse-by-verse study of the book of Joshua, Jen Wilkin helps us see God’s continuing faithfulness to fulfill His covenant promises, both to Israel then and to us today. Israel’s story is our story. We battle not against flesh and blood as they did, but we courageously war against the temptations of the world, the flesh, and the Devil, trusting in the finished work of the true and better Joshua, Jesus Christ.

What does the Bible say about heavenly rewards?  Join us for a deep dive into this topic.

Please RSVP before July 22 so we know how many to plan lunch for.  Thanks!
