Fishers of Men

When He had finished speaking, He said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.”
Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”
When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.
When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!”  For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken,  and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners.
Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.”  So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed Him.  (Luke 5:4-11)

This is one of my favorite passages from all the Scriptures.  Jesus tells Peter to cast out his nets and Peter, like me, has lots of excuses why he shouldn’t.  “Master, we have been out all night, throwing out our nets again and again - untangling them over and over.  We just got in this morning when you started teaching.  In fact, we just finished cleaning out our nets of junk and sticks and mud.  At this point, me and the guys are excited to go home and go to bed.”

Sometimes when I think of the Lord’s call to make disciples and share the Good News I do the same thing as Simon Peter, “Lord, that family really isn’t interested in hearing about Your Son.  I don’t really know how to start the conversation with them.  They don’t want to listen to me.  Lord, I don’t think I’m really the guy to do this.”

But look again above at how quickly Peter gets to these words, “But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”  God, because you say so we will obey.  We will do what you tell us.

When we take that step of faith and obedience, I believe we will experience such a work of God (like Peter and his companions filling two boats full of fish) that we will be blown away.  And like Peter, we will respond with amazement that God could use messed up sinners like us saying: “Go away from me Lord for I am a sinful man!”  And we will hear God’s voice, “Don’t be afraid, from now on you will fish for people.”

This is our call Hope, to fish for people.  Let’s experience the amazing things our God can do through us when we say, like Peter: “Because you say so God, we will do it.”

Discipleship Corner

“And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others.”  (2 Timothy 2:2)
That word “reliable” means faithful, trusting, trustworthy, sure.  Are we reliable?  Can others entrust important things to us? Can our leaders rely on us to teach others the important message of the Gospel?  Are we trustworthy to share the word of God with others? Does God consider us faithful to Him?
These are great questions for us to ask, to self-evaluate.  Hopefully we all have a desire to grow to be more reliable in serving the Lord and to pass on the greatest gift we have ever been given…Jesus!
Go get ‘em!  Pastor Dave

Happy July, Hope!

I pray you’re all staying cool and enjoying summer break! We are settling back into a routine at Wilson, and we are excited that our classrooms are finally set. K-1st and 2nd-3rd meet in the hallway to the right of the lobby, and all other classes meet in the left hallway.
We are beginning the next quarter with our Loaves and Fish memory program and are supporting Unite 4 Africa again.  Lots of students have collected at least 5 fish!  We would love to see them turn them in to any Director on Duty on Sunday mornings and donate cash to Unite 4 Africa or school/craft supplies to Josh Brock and Danielle Padilla.  We will pass out cards with updated verses for July-September, and you can also find them on our app. July’s verses are:

  • 2 Peter 3:9:   The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise, as some understand slowness. Instead, He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.
  • Isaiah 53:7:   He was oppressed and afflicted, yet He did not open His mouth; He was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent, so He did not open His mouth.

Due to vacations and lower attendance over the summer, we will continue opening all classrooms in the 1st service and only nursery-preschool in the 2nd service.  Once school starts in August, we hope to provide all classes for both services. For that to happen, we need at least 2 more teachers for preschool, 2 more adults for nursery/toddler, and a mix of 3-4 more teachers/assistants for K-5.  If you have been attending Hope for at least six months and have a heart for sharing the Gospel with children, we would love to get you involved!

Reminders and updates:

  • As always, please send your children with water bottles, and if you can, take them to the restroom before class.
  • Kindergartners will move out of preschool and into the K-1st class on August 8th.

It is a pleasure to see you all on Sundays!

Blessings,
Kyria
