Getting Back On Track

“Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.” (Joshua 1:8, NIV)

“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” (Psalm 119:105, NIV)

I recently read a study that claimed that the most important factor in producing an active Christian life is daily Bible reading.  It seems simple – not rocket science.  This survey looked at what was helping people continuously live for Christ in obedient discipleship.  The conclusion was – of all the many good things one can do to keep abiding – daily Bible reading was super important.
As we move into September, I want to encourage you to have daily time with the Lord.  Possibly, you had a plan for the year that you have fallen behind on.  Don’t necessarily try to get caught up.  Set time tomorrow morning or night to read the Word, pray, and grow in your faith - then repeat tomorrow and the next day and so on.  It is worth it, and your enemy will try to keep you from getting into a good routine so be ready for the battle.
I want to share my current routine with you that I try to do every morning for 20-30 minutes.  It is not the only way, but it may help some of you get into a good groove of time with the Lord.  Here are my current four steps:

Step #1
Read along in a book of the Bible until I feel like I hear something from the Lord or until I hear something that really impacts me.  (Maybe try John or Acts if you are just starting out.)  Then I journal briefly whatever that was.

Step #2
Spend time praying – for the day, for those hurting, for my HomeGroup, for my kids, for Hope…

Step #3
Do a little Scripture Memory.  I keep a notebook of these verses with dates and just pick up where I left off – even if I missed a few days.  (See the method I follow below)

Step #4
Read a couple pages from a book for spiritual growth from a trusted author.  (Need some recommendations?  Try:  The Master Plan of Evangelism by Robert Coleman, The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom, Desiring God by John Piper)

Method For Long Term Scripture Memory:
• Day 1: 25 times aloud with appropriate inflection in voice.
• Day 2: 20 times
• Day 3: 15 times
• Day 4: 10 times
• Day 5: 5 times
• Then daily for 45-60 days.
• Weekly for one year.
• Monthly for 2-3 years.
• 2-3 times per year for life.

Hello Hope Families!
Our Philippine’s mission team came up with a wonderful idea to create a connection between our HopeKids and the children in the Philippines. Can you please have your child(ren) draw a self-portrait and write a prayer request on the back so that the Filipino children can be praying for our kids? It would be special if you could also attach an actual photo of your child and possibly a short letter. The team will bring back self-portraits and prayer requests from the children so that we can be praying for them too! You can bring the pictures to the HopeKids check-in desk or turn them in to your child’s classroom teacher on Sunday. We will need all the pictures by September 24.

This month, we will be hosting a free Child Discipleship Forum, presented online by AWANA International, “to hear from Bible-minded leaders in child advocacy, and learn to cultivate a different spirit in our kids — one of conviction, courage, compassion and commitment”. This will be beneficial for parents or anyone who works with children and youth. You are invited to join us in the Hope Community Room on Overton for any part of the Forum.  For more information about the presenters at the forum, visit this site:  Link here You can also email me for the daily schedule.  Please RSVP by September 17th.
Please reach out to me if you have any questions!

We would also like to get our HopeKids involved in the special Building Fund Offering on October 29th. Like the Easter offering, Pastor Randy is encouraging the kids to think of ways to raise money to help with our new Hope Church Building. It could be doing extra chores, selling homemade items, or donating some of their allowance. Of course, this includes our new HopeKids building which will be awesome. It will be great to have the kids involved!
